Learning to Hold Light

Sometimes the things we hold most tightly are the very things that prevent us from making beautiful music. Like learning to play an instrument, there's a balance between holding on and letting go - between having control and allowing flow.

Whether it's our expectations, our plans, our understanding of Scripture, or even our faith itself, Jesus invites us to hold things lightly. Not because they don't matter, but because when we grip too tightly, we can't respond to the rhythm of God's leading.

What music is Jesus calling you to make with your life?

The metaphor of “holding light” especially applies to how we approach the Bible. When we hold Scripture lightly - not carelessly, but with open hands - we allow it to breathe, to speak in new ways, to challenge and transform us rather than simply confirming what we already think we know.

This episode explores Christ's fulfillment of the law and spiritual transformation

Matthew 5:17-18

The Art of Holding Lightly

Throughout Scripture, we see the invitation to hold things lightly - not because they don't matter, but because our tight grip can prevent us from receiving what God has for us. Like Abraham being willing to sacrifice Isaac, or the disciples leaving their nets to follow Jesus.

When we approach Scripture itself with this “holding light” posture, we allow the text to breathe and speak in new ways. We become students rather than masters, open to being surprised and challenged rather than simply having our existing beliefs confirmed.

This doesn't mean we treat Scripture carelessly, but rather that we hold it with the reverence of someone who knows they're encountering something living and dynamic - something that can transform us if we're willing to let it.
